Hollow Fibre Low Pressure Membranes
It is well known that our planet has an abundance of water, but just 1% is drinkable. The good news is that ATC has systems to convert the remaining 99% into potable water. Groundwater is running dry, and rivers and lakes are becoming very heavily polluted. The most obvious, and increasingly the most effective alternative source, is the ocean.
ATC has the world’s leading systems for converting seawater into drinking water. Our partners built the world’s first and the world’s largest plants for desalinating seawater, and developed advanced technologies in conjunction with NASA, the US Navy, and other US Government agencies.
As a result, we can offer well-proven, unique systems with unmatched quality, reliability, ease of operation, and cost savings. The systems will run unattended for extended periods, and can include full automation with remote monitoring.
Our energy recovery systems can cut power bills by up to 60%. Very low production costs per cubic meter/gallon of drinking water will help you to meet budgets or profit targets (one cubic meter = 1000 liters).
We provide a full service, including design, manufacturing, implementation, training, operational support, monitoring, and maintenance. In addition, we provide in-county support, consumables and spare parts.
The core process for desalination is known as reverse osmosis (RO). This is the only commercially-acceptable way to produce large quantities of drinking water from seawater. It was invented in the 1950s and is now fully perfected. It relies on high-pressure pumps to push water molecules through semi-permeable membranes. Pure drinking water can pass through the membranes, but salts and other contaminants are too large to fit through the microscopic pores.
As you can imagine, it is a tough job to prevent RO pores from becoming clogged. We use cross-flow, spiral wound, tubular membranes to maximize membrane area and minimize clogging. Seawater is pumped along the outside of the tube under pressure; pure water permeates through the membrane into the center of the tube. Turbulence on the surface of the membrane keeps the salts moving so they are flushed away.
The concentrated salts are highly corrosive, so we use only the highest quality materials which are proven in this harsh environment – including titanium pumps (photo, right).
In order to maximize throughput, reduce wear on the membranes, and extend their life, our systems include a very thorough pre-treatment stage which reduces particulate matter and other junk in the water. A 20-times reduction in junk gives you 50-times improvement in the membrane cleaning-and-replacement cycle.
Depending on the quality of your raw water, we will include the most appropriate pre-treatment for you – either ultra-filtration (UF, a low pressure version of RO membranes or media filtration.
Post-treatment would normally include pH adjustment, re-mineralization, and precision chlorine-dosing to prevent bacterial growth in your storage and distribution system. The end result is perfectly polished, healthy, and great-tasting drinking water.
ATC seawater systems are available skid mounted (top right) or containerized. They are pre-tested and delivered ready to run at the touch of a button.
